Romantisches Wochenende in Aberdeenshire: Schlösser, Burgen und Fischerdörfer

Aberdeenshire ist ein verstecktes Juwel an der Küste Schottlands. Wer so wie wir, die Romantik in der Einsamkeit sucht, ist hier richtig. Aberdeenshire: Anreise und Übernachtung im Meldrum House

Aberdeenshire ist die Region rund um die Stadt Aberdeen. Vom Flugahfen in Aberdeen sind es rund fünfzehn Autominuten in die Stadt oder eine halbe Stunde zu unserem Hotel. Wir übernachten eine Nacht im Meldrum House, einem Golfhotel mitten in Aberdeenshire, das aussieht wie eine kleine Burg. Umgeben von 240 Hektar Grün, hört man hier nichts, außer dem Knistern des Feuers im Kamin. Vor dem Haus plätschert ein Brunnen, der aber heute eingefroren ist, ein Hochlandrind grast auf der Weide. Im Sommer ziehen Schwäne ihre Runden durch einen Teich. 2018 wurde das Meldrum House zu Großbritannien’s bestem Boutique Hotel gekürt. Es existiert bereits seit dem 13.Jahrhundert und liegt in Inverurie, etwa 30 Kilometer von Aberdeen entfernt. Bekannt ist das Hotel für seine Cave Bar, die über 800 Jahre alt ist und über 120 Whisky Sorten serviert.  Wir haben das Glück in einem Eckzimmer zu schlafen, das rundum bodentiefe Fenster hat. Und so beginnen wir den Tag mit einer Tasse Tee mit einem Rundum-Blick auf das Grün. Zum Abendessen zaubert der Koch ein veganes Menü für uns. Für einen Tag fühlen wir uns ein bisschen wie die Könige von Schottland.

Aberdeenshire:  Our stay at Meldrum House

Aberdeenshire is the region around the city of Aberdeen, which has its own airport. It’s a fifteen minute drive into town or half an hour to our hotel. We spend the night at Meldrum House, a golf hotel in the middle of Aberdeenshire that looks like a little castle. Surrounded by 240 acres of green, nothing is heard here except the crackling fireplace in the lobby. A fountain splashes in front of the house, but it is frozen today. In summer swans make their rounds through a pond. In 2018 Meldrum House was named Britain’s Best Boutique Hotel. It exists since the 13th century and is located in Meldrum about 30 kilometers from Aberdeen. The hotel is known for its Cave Bar, which is over 800 years old and serves over 120 whiskey varieties. We are fortunate to sleep in a corner room, which has floor to ceiling windows. And so we start the day with a cup of tea overlooking the green.For dinner, the chef  cooks a special vegan menu for us. For a day we feel a bit like the kings of Scotland.

Schlösser und Burgen in Aberdeenshire

Insgesamt findet ihr 263 Schlösser in Aberdeenshire. Viele fahren den bekannten Castle Trail entlang, eine Route mit 19 Schlössern und Burgen. Wir entscheiden uns drei davon an einem Tag zu besuchen und brechen morgens zum Dunnottar Castle auf. Über Nacht hat es geschneit, sodass die Landschaft unter einer dicken weißen Decke liegt.

Die Burgruine Dunnottar liegt auf einer Landzunge, etwa 3 Kilometer von Stonehaven entfernt. Das Schloss lässt sich bequem mit dem Auto erreichen, vom Parkplatz läuft man etwa fünf Minuten bis zum Aussichtspunkt, von dem man tolle Fotos der Ruine machen kann. Hier sind heute nur wenige Touristen unterwegs. Als nächstes geht es zum Crathes Castle in Banchory. Es stammt aus der zweiten Hälfte des 16.Jahrhunderts. Im Schlosspark ist eine Menge los, überall flitzen Kinder mit ihren Schlitten herum. Im Sommer kann man in den Gartenanlagen bestimmt toll picknicken.

Dunnottar Castle

Weiter geht es zum Craigievar Castle. Hier hat es besonders viel geschneit, sodass wir das Auto an der Landstraße parken und den Weg zu Fuß laufen. Die Sonne strahlt auf die zugeschneiten Felder. Weit und breit ist niemand zu sehen. Ich muss zugeben, dass mir ein kleines Tränchen über die Wange läuft, als wir das Schloss erreichen. Schieben wir das mal auf die Kälte. 😉  Das Craigievar Castle ist eine rosafarbene Turmburg aus dem 16.Jahrhundert. Es war die Inspiration für Walt Disney’s Cinderella Schloss. Und auch hier haben wir den Blick auf das Prinzessinnen-Schloss ganz für uns allein. Romantischer geht’s nicht, oder? Ein guter Grund die Region in der Nebensaison zu besuchen. Ich kann mir vorstellen, noch einmal zurück zu kommen und den kompletten Castle Trail anzuschauen.

Castles in Aberdeenshire

In total you will find 263 castles in Aberdeenshire. Many drive along the well-known Castle Trail, a route with 19 castles. We decide to visit three of them in one day and head out to Dunnottar Castle in the morning. It snowed overnight, leaving the landscape under a thick white blanket. Dunnottar Castle is located on a promontory about 3 kilometers from Stonehaven. The castle is easily reached by car, from the car park you can walk for about five minutes to the view point where you can take great pictures of the ruins. There are only a few tourists here today.

Next up is Crathes Castle in Banchory. It dates back to the second half of the 16th century. A lot is going on in the castle park: children are whizzing around with their sledges everywhere. I can imagine that you can have a nice picknick here in the summer. Next stop: Craigievar Castle. It snowed a lot here, so we park the car close to the highway and walk the path up to the castle. The sun shines on the snow-covered fields. There is nobody to see, far and wide. I have to admit that a little teardrop runs down my cheek when we reach the castle. Let’s put that down to the cold wind. 😉 The Craigievar Castle is an example of the original Scottish Baronial architecture from the 16th century. It was the inspiration for Walt Disney’s Cinderella Castle. And here we have the view of the Princess Castle entirely for us! It could not be more romantic, right? A good reason to visit the region in the off season. I can imagine coming back one day and visit the whole Castle Trail.

Vegetarisch Essen in Aberdeenshire

„Buchanan’s Bistro“ in Banchory ist ein Restaurant, das ausschließlich mit regionalen, saisonalen Zutaten kocht. Das Gemüse wird im eigenen Garten gezogen. Ihr Motto „We care about the planet as well as your plate“. Hier wird recycelt, kompostiert und Müll reduziert. Das Bistro bezieht seine Zutaten von regionalen Partnern. Unser Tisch steht direkt vor der riesigen Fensterfront, mit einem Blick auf die Landschaft. Stammgäste schätzen das Bistro so sehr, dass sie mehrmals die Woche vorbeikommen. Im Gespräch mit der Köchin Val Buchhanan wird deutlich, wie sehr sie die Gegend Aberdeenshire schätzt und wie groß ihre Liebe zu gutem, ehrlichem Essen ist.

Abends geht es für uns ins vegan-vegetarische „Foodstory“ in der Thistle Street in Aberdeen. Es erinnert mich von der Atmosphäre her an das Café aus Friends. „Foodstory“ ist ein „Community Café“, wo regelmäßig Veranstaltungen, wie Kleidertauschpartys oder Yoga Kurse stattfinden. Alles wirkt selfmade: Viele der Möbel sind Second Hand, wurden gespendet oder selbst zusammen gebaut.

Das „Eat on the Green“ in Udny Green, einem kleinen Dorf in Aberdeenshire war einst ein kleines Pub. Vor 15 Jahren verwandelte es Koch Craig Wilson in ein „Fine Dining“ Restaurant, das als eins der besten in Aberdeenshire gilt. Wir dürfen einen Blick hinter die Kulissen werfen und schauen dem hektischen Treiben in der Küche zu. Hier setzt er auf Personal direkt aus der Region. Zum Mittagessen werden wir mit einem vegan-vegetarischem Menü überrascht.

Unser letztes Abendessen essen wir im „Malmaison Hotel“. Das Boutique Hotel ist für seine Bar und ein großes Restaurant bekannt, das auf Steaks spezialisiert ist. Trotzdem bietet das „Malmaison“ eine eigene vegane Karte an – mit großer Auswahl an Vorspeisen, Hauptspeisen und Nachtischen. Mir wird sogar veganer Wein angeboten, was in großen Restaurants, die nicht auf vegane Speisen spezialisiert sind, schon etwas besonders ist.

Veggie food in Aberdeenshire

„Buchanan’s Bistro“ in Banchory is a restaurant that uses only local, seasonal ingredients. The vegetables are grown in their own garden. Their motto is „We care about the planet as well as your plate“.  The restaurant recycles, composts and reduces trash and gets its ingredients from regional partners. Our table is right in front of the huge window front, with a view of the landscape. Locals enjoy the bistro so much that they come by several times a week. In conversation with chef Val Buchhanan, it becomes clear how much she appreciates the Aberdeenshire area and how great her love for good, honest food is.

In the evening, we eat at the vegan-vegetarian  café „Foodstory“ on Thistle Street in Aberdeen. It reminds of the café from Friends. „Foodstory“ is a „Community Café“, where events such as clothing swap parties or yoga classes take place on a regular basis. Everything looks selfmade:  The furniture is second-hand, donated or built together.

Eat on The Green

The „Eat on the Green“ in Udny Green, a small village in Aberdeenshire was once a small pub. Fifteen years ago, Chef Craig Wilson turned it into a „fine dining“ restaurant, that is now considered one of the best restaurants in Aberdeenshire. We can take a look behind the scenes and watch the hectic hustle and bustle in the kitchen. Wilson relies on staff directly from the region. For lunch, we are surprised with a vegan-vegetarian menu.

Our last dinner is at the „Malmaison Hotel“. The Boutique Hotel is known for its bar and large restaurant specializing in steaks. Nevertheless, the „Malmaison“ offers its own vegan menu – with a large selection of appetizers, main courses and desserts. I am even offered vegan wine, which is something special in large restaurants that are not specialized in vegan food.

Fischerdörfer in Aberdeenshire: Crovie und Pennan

Schon oben auf dem Hügel von Crovie erleben wir etwas, das wir in den letzten Wochen vermisst haben: absolute Stille, bis auf das Rauschen der Wellen. Das Dorf kann man nur über einen Fußweg erreichen, Autos sind hier selbst für die Anwohner verboten. Eine Treppe führt über den Hügel an das Meeresufer, wo sich kleine Fischerhäuser aneinander reihen. Fernab von Verkehr, Mobilfunksignal und Geschäften, ist Crovie ein Ort, wo man dem Alltag entfliehen kann.

Der eisige Wind pustet uns zurück auf den Parkplatz und ins nächste Dorf namens Pennan. Auch hier sind wir die einzigen Reisenden und haben den Blick auf die kleine Küstenstadt ganz für uns. Die Luft ist kalt und klar. Bekannt ist das Städtchen aus dem Film „Local Hero“ aus den 80ern. Noch immer kann man eine Requisite aus dem Film, die rote Telefonzelle dort sehen. Sie gehört zu den meist fotografierten Telefonzellen Schottlands. Leider muss ich euch ein Foto davon vorenthalten. Ich habe wie verrückt die Telefonzelle in Crovie fotografiert, da ich vor lauter Entzückung die beiden Städtchen verwechselt habe. Na, wenn das nicht ein Grund ist, noch einmal zu kommen?

Coastal towns in Aberdeenshire: Crovie and Pennan

On top of the hill of Crovie we experience something that we have missed in the past week: complete silence, except for the sound of the waves. The village can only be reached via a footpath, cars are prohibited even for the local residents. A staircase leads from the hill to the seashore, where small fishermen’s houses line up. Far away from traffic, mobile signal and shops, Crovie is a place where you can escape from everyday life. The icy wind blows us back to the parking lot and the next village called Pennan. Again, we are the only travelers and have the view of the small coastal town quite for us. The air is cold and clear. The town is known from the movie „Local Hero“ from the 80s. A prop from the movie can still be seen here: the red telephone booth. It is one of the most photographed phone booths in Scotland. Unfortunately I have to withhold a photo from you. I photographed the telephone booth in Crovie like crazy, because I thought this was the fancy one. Sorry. Now I have to come back to take a picture again 🙂
